Service Learning Project Important Information
The project will take place at a non profit children's dining hall.  This is run by a non-governmental organization and it serves the less fortunate and provides basic and emotional needs for senior citizens, Haitian immigrants, homeless families, at risk youth and single mothers.  Responsibliites and activities may include painting walls, benches, tables and playground equipment.  There is also opportunity to plant flowers and build the garden at the youth center.  We will interact with the many children each day and organize crafts and activities and teaching English.

Rider University will be collaborating with our study abroad provider, ISA (International Studies Abroad) and our on-site coordinator in the Dominican Republic.

Trip Dates: Saturday, March 15th - Saturday, March 22 2014

Application Deadline: November 15th, 2013

Program cost:

$2,500 + $75 application fee.
Trip is inclusive of International airfare, all meals, shared room in a modest hotel, insurance, all cultural activities and donations to the Children's Dining Hall.

Note: This trip requires a non-refundable $75 application fee

Note: This trips requires an interview with both trip leaders and 2 pre-departure sessions in February with a final session in March.
Location and trip details/Inclusions

This project will take place in Santiago, Dominican Republic! Santiago is the second largest city in the Dominican Republic and the economic center of the Cibao Valley. Santiago has a relaxed and refined atmosphere and the most vibrant Carnival celebration in the country.  Whether strolling through the shopping district of Calle Del Sol or dancing to the rhythms of merengue, Santiago has proven to be an ideal location for study abroad and service abroad trips.

Cultural activities and excursions included:

  • Santiago city tour
  • Educational talk with Haitian-Dominican relations
  • Salsa dance lesson
  • Cooking demonstration
  • 1/2 day trip to 27 Charcos which are 27 pristine waterfalls in the middle of the jungle.  We explore by jumping into naturally formed pools and sliding down waterfalls
  • 1/2 day trip to Puerto Plata Beach which is located on the northern coast
