Academics Location
The ISA semester programs in Florianópolis combine solid academic offerings with a variety of excursions and cultural activities. Students choose 4 to 5 courses from a selection of Portuguese language courses, electives taught in English, and electives taught in Portuguese with local students. Students who have not completed a college semester/quarter of Portuguese or the equivalent must choose language as one of their courses. All courses are taught by highly experienced professionals and academics from the host faculty of the Universidade do Sul de Santa Catarina (UNISUL). The classroom is comprised of ISA students, Brazilian students, and other visiting international students. Along with lectures and discussions, many of the courses integrate excursions to important sites in southern Brazil. Florianópolis consistently ranks as one of Brazil's top five safest cities and has recently been recognized as one of the world's top travel destinations. The city is one of Brazil's pristine destinations with exquisite dining and nightlife, untouched nature reserves, innumerable parks, and charming fishing villages that showcase a wealth of landscapes, aromas, and colors. Florianópolis, composed of one main island, one continental part and surrounding small islands, is a beautiful city in southern Brazil. Modern and cosmopolitan, yet blessed with tremendous natural beauty, Florianópolis is a unique destination where past and present coexist harmoniously. This popular Brazilian city has a total of 42 main beaches, rolling mountains in the Atlantic rainforest, soft white sand dunes, and an array of offshore islands.
