Program Description:

ISA – Charles University

Academics Location
Czech and Roman King Charles IV founded Prague University on April 7, 1348 as the first university to the north of the Alps and to the east of Paris. The University grew rapidly and garnered respect throughout Europe for hundreds of years. Through the "Liberal Arts" program at Charles University, students have the opportunity to choose from a variety of humanities-based courses during a semester or academic year program in Prague, Czech Republic. ISA works closely with faculty at Charles University to develop coursework exclusively designed for ISA students. Subjects offered include history, architecture, cinema, economics, politics and Czech language. The courses offered are instructed in English at Charles University by host university faculty, and classmates are ISA students. While there is no language pre-requisite for this program, all students must complete the two-week intensive Czech Language course for 50 total contact hours. Prague rests along the banks of the Vltava River, and has been the political, cultural, and economic hotspot of Eastern Europe for over 1000 years. With over 1.2 million local inhabitants in the city proper, and a constant flow of international travelers exploring the city, Prague is a bustling capital of global importance. Since 1992, Prague has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and for good reason: The city is an unaltered, hands-on museum, full of famous theaters and opera houses performing Mozart's Don Giovanni, open parks with political protest history, and centuries-old buildings converted into late-night discothèques.
Student Life
ISA students are placed in furnished, spacious apartments. Because of the central location, apartments are well suited for students looking for cultural immersion experience. Many of the ISA apartments are located in buildings with Czech families and international students, giving students the opportunity to interact with locals. In addition to their living situation, ISA students have access to all that their neighborhood has to offer: open-air markets, specialty stores, boutiques, restaurants, and historical sites. All of this allows students the chance to explore their neighborhood and become comfortable with their life in Prague. All apartments are either within walking distance or conveniently located to public transit routes relative to the university. Meals and laundry service are not included.
